Tennessee Handgun Carry Permits: Enhanced, Concealed and Lifetime

Tennessee has not required a permit to carry a handgun since July 1, 2021 for most adults who lawfully possess one. The state still issues permits, and many people still get one.

Why get a permit anyway

Permitless carry only applies in Tennessee. Other states decide whether to honor a Tennessee permit, so a permit is what lets you carry when you travel to a state that recognizes it.

Permit types and fees

• Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit — $100 ($65 for eligible military applicants), valid for 8 years, open or concealed carry.
• Concealed Handgun Carry Permit — $65, concealed carry only.
• Lifetime Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit — $300, or $200 to upgrade an existing enhanced permit.

Buying a handgun

Is an enhanced permit the same as a concealed permit?

No. The enhanced permit covers open or concealed carry; the concealed permit covers concealed carry only.

How long is a Tennessee enhanced permit valid?

Eight years, unless you choose the lifetime permit.

Do I still need a permit in Tennessee?

Not for most adults 21 and older since July 1, 2021, but a permit matters for carrying in other states that recognize it.
