Buying a Gun in Tennessee: Age Limits, Background Checks and Carry Rules
This guide covers what federal and Tennessee law require when you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer, including an online order that transfers through a local FFL dealer.
Minimum age
Federal law (18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(1)) bars a licensed dealer from selling a rifle or shotgun to anyone under 18, and any other firearm — handguns, frames and receivers included — to anyone under 21.
The background check
You fill out ATF Form 4473 at the dealer and the dealer runs a background check before handing over the firearm. Tennessee is a point-of-contact state: dealers run the check through the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Tennessee Instant Check System (TICS) rather than directly with the FBI. If a check is denied, TBI handles the appeal.
Handguns, long guns and your state of residence
Under 18 U.S.C. § 922(b)(3), a dealer may sell a rifle or shotgun to a resident of another state in person, if the sale is legal in both states. Carrying a handgun in Tennessee
Since July 1, 2021 (Public Chapter 108), Tennessee has allowed people who are generally 21 or older, and who lawfully possess a handgun, to carry it without a permit where they have a right to be.
